Math Advising Guide: Algebra Path

MATH 0940-Pre-Algebra
Students taking 0940 should feel confident doing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with counting numbers, and have some familiarity with positive and negative numbers. Students in 0940 will learn to calculate with signed numbers, including fractions, decimals and integers. They will also learn to manipulate algebra expressions (including polynomials and those containing negative exponents) and solve basic equations. Students will learn to solve word problems using equations and be introduced to graphing.
MATH 1130-Elementary Algebra

Students taking 1130 should feel confident calculating with fractions and signed numbers, manipulating basic algebra expressions, and solving basic equations.

Students in 1130 will learn to manipulate expressions with exponents, polynomials (including factoring) and fractions containing polynomials. They will also learn to solve basic and quadratic equations, and use those equations to solve word problems. Students will also learn to graph basic equations.

MATH 1140-Intermediate Algebra

Students taking 1140 should feel confident calculating with all real numbers, manipulating algebra expressions (including exponential expressions), solving linear equations and using equations to solve some word problems.

Students in 1140 will learn to manipulate polynomials (including factoring), fractions containing polynomials, radical expressions and functions. They will also learn to solve polynomial, rational, radical and systems of equations, and use those equations to solve word problems. Students will also learn to graph equations & inequalities.

MATH 1150-College Algebra

Students taking 1150 should feel confident manipulating polynomials (including factoring), rationals, radicals, and graphs; as well as solving linear and quadratic equations & inequalilies.

Students in 1150 will learn to manipulate and graph polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions. They will also solve equations related to those functions, and solve systems of equations and inequalities. Students will learn to graph basic functions and their transformations as well as function operations and composition.
